OUR NEW VENUE!
PAHALA PLANTATION COTTAGES
A restored sugar plantation mansion and houses in a quiet town between Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, these dwellings of yesteryear were once homes for sugar plantation workers and managers, as well as teachers at the local school until 1996 when Ka‘u Sugar Co. gave way to new agriculture. Since the shutdown, local residents have fixed up the town and created a post-plantation economy of small businesses. Coffee, flower and vegetable farms, macadamia orchards, and free range cattle, horse and goat ranches surround the village.
The plantation property is surrounded by Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, land of steam vents, suphur banks, lava tubes, craters and active lava flows. The cottages are historically appointed with wooden floors and high ceilings, and are furnished with antiques. Pahala town is within walking distance of the community lap pool, tennis courts, walkable country roads. On the drive from Pahala to Na‘alehu along the old cane haul road, you'll see the tabletop mountains and lush valleys and see the macadamia nut orchards, coffee farms, horse and cattle ranches.
Nearby Wood Valley Road takes you to the Ka‘u Coffee Mill and Wood Valley Temple, a Buddhist retreat that is open to the public - a place where the Dalai Lama has visited. Take 7 minutes and drive to the Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach where you can snorkel, bathe in the sun, walk along the shore, and gaze at resting sea turtles.
